Some domain name registration services register domains in their business names rather than in their clients' names. This means that the domain name "belongs" to the registration service, rather than the client — and this can make it difficult for the client to transfer control of the domain to another hosting service or ISP. In fact, the cooperation of the registration service is needed to bring about the transfer; cooperation that it might only provide if paid a further fee.
